Eljamel Inquiry urges anyone with evidence to get in touch
The Eljamel Inquiry has appealed for potential witnesses to come forward as it prepares for future hearings.
Senior Counsel to the Inquiry, Jamie Dawson KC, has encouraged anyone who believes they may have evidence relevant to the Inquiry’s work to get in touch.
Mr Dawson said the Inquiry had already been contacted directly by some individuals with information about their involvement.
As the Inquiry begins to plan beyond its section 1 and 2 hearings, Mr Dawson said he wished to “issue a further, clear and unequivocal public call for evidence”.
Speaking during his opening address at the beginning of the Inquiry’s section 1 hearings, Mr Dawson said: “I wish to invite any medical professionals, current or former employees of organisations with an interest in our work, including NHS Tayside or the Scottish Government, to make contact with the Inquiry to explain what evidence they feel they can offer relating to any matter falling within our Terms of Reference or more detailed List of Issues.”
Mr Dawson said the Inquiry would particularly like to hear from “those medical professionals who had an involvement in the work of Mr Eljamel”.
He said: “They may be other neurosurgeons or doctors or surgeons involved in associated medical disciplines linked to Mr Eljamel’s work, such as but not limited to radiology, neurology or anaesthesia.
“They may have been contemporaries or subordinates. They may be nurses or other staff who worked with him or had knowledge of his work, either at a hospital or somewhere else like the University of Dundee.
“They may include medical professionals who were involved in investigations into him or who made complaints, raised concerns or provided feedback about him.
“Any such individual who may wish to contact the Inquiry can be assured that their approach will be treated confidentially and professionally. The Chair is willing to accept evidence from such individuals anonymously, if appropriate, to protect the individuals concerned.”
Anyone who has relevant evidence to provide - or who believes they may be able to provide evidence but is unsure how relevant it is – is asked to contact the Solicitor to the Inquiry as soon as possible on legal@eljamelinquiry.scot or by the postal address on our contact page.
